Fundraising Tips

BTW-85Walkers are encouraged to raise at least $200 in donations. We know that many of you may be a little bit intimidated by this requirement. We also know that most of you are going to be really surprised at how quickly the donations add up once you put your heart, your creativity, and your commitment into the effort.

The key is beginning if you have not already done so! We are extremely pleased when participants tell us they are striving to greatly exceed the $200 minimum we suggest. The more money raised means more money donated to the programs for breast and gynecologic programs at Long Beach Memorial's Todd Cancer Institute. All funds generated from this event stay in the Long Beach community.

If you've never done fundraising before (or even if you have), it might be a little frightening. Rest assured, most people feel the same way! Listed below are just a few things to keep in mind.

It's not for you. Remember, you're not asking people to fund your next car payment or Hawaiian vacation. You're asking for money to help in the fight against Breast & Ovarian Cancer. The money raised will provide free support and programs available to any breast/ovarian cancer patient or their family regardless of which hospital they are receiving their treatment.

Know your stuff. Be informed about why you're doing this. Memorize a few key facts about Team Spirit and  Long Beach Memorial Medical Center Foundation, and some of the work they do.

Team Spirit's vision and commitment enables Long Beach Memorial to offer patient care programs, such as a Support Group for gynecological cancers, a psychosocial program, and unique peer mentoring through the Breast Friends program. Team Spirit has also helps fund a part time social worker to assist patients through their treatment process.

  • More than 54,000 women and men will die of breast or ovarian cancer this year. WE must all do our part to put an end to this. Together we can make a difference.

  • There are so many very good reasons for what you're doing, and you should share them with your donors.

Be prepared. Always carry your Team Spirit donation forms and envelope. Always. Because you never know. A donation could come from anyone, anywhere, anytime. So talk, talk, talk. Tell everyone you know that you are raising money and participating in Team Spirit's Long Beach Breast & Ovarian Cancer 5K & 10K. Tell everyone you know and everyone you don't know. Just tell everyone.

Create a Personal Fundraising Page. It's one of the easiest ways to let all your friends and family know what you are doing, why you are walking and ask for donations. Create a Personal Fundraising Page, set a goal, email it to everyone you know, and watch the donations come in....and even better, your friends can forward your information on to everyone they know. It's fast and it's easy.

Send a mailing. Use one of our sample letters....personalize it, include in it why you are walking, why this event is important to you....

The magic words... of course you'll say please when asking for donations, but don't forget to thank your sponsors, too. Send them a simple note, or a photo of you wearing your Team Spirit t-shirt. Make your donors a part of your Team Spirit experience, and they'll feel even better about the part they're playing in helping you to make a difference in the on-going fight against Breast & Ovarian Cancer.
